Davis Cup: Andy Murray Vows To Bounce Back From Wimbledon SF Exit
Andy Murray has aimed to bounce back from his Wimbledon semifinal exit in this year’s Davis Cup. Murray, who lost to Roger Federer in three sets 7-5, 7-5, 6-4, believes Great Britain is ready to overcome France in their Davis Cup quarterfinal match at Queen’s Club in London, England from July 17-19.
Murray, who hopes to win at least two points in singles match, believes Britain’s tennis team has been showing good performances over the last couple of years. The world’s third best tennis player admitted that facing France will be a tough challenge for the Britons as they face four top grass-court players that are “really, really good players”, but is positive they have a chance to win if they play at their best level.
Great Britain Davis Cup team captain Leon Smith sees the upcoming quarterfinal match as any team’s game citing that unexpected things can happen. The 34-year-old Scottish tennis coach is confident about an upset to France, but added it will be “very difficult” according to BBC.com.
"It's very different playing for your country than it is as an individual and some players do that better than others. We've just got to hope that somehow we can get three points on the board,” Smith said.
Murray will play on his favoured grass surface with James Ward, Dom Inglot, and brother Jamie Murray. Ward got defeated by Vasek Pospisil at the third round of Wimbledon, while Jamie reached the men’s doubles final round only to fall from a Rojer-Tecau tandem.
Meanwhile, France boasts of a talented lineup for Friday’s showdown in West Kensington. The French team will feature players in world number 11-13 rankings Giles Simon, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Richard Gasquet. They will also include doubles specialist Nicolas Mahut according to Yahoo News.
Britain will be bidding to reach the semi-finals for the first time since 1981. They will either face Australia or Kazakhstan, who have their matches set at Darwin. Argentina and Serbia will face each other in Buenos Aires, while the other set of the quarterfinal match between Belgium and Canada will take place in Ostend.
