Early reviews of "Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes" revealed, that the movie begins ten years after the events of "Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes" and this time a new villain named Koba is involved in the fight between humans and apes.

The movie sees the earth as a bleak world for humans to live in after the simian virus from "Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes" has killed majority of its human inhabitants. However, "Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes" doesn't start off with how the humans are thriving. Instead it begins by showing viewers how the apes have flourished in those ten years.

According to Hitfix, the apes have built a home and a culture on the ashes of the human world. It's been two years of not seeing even a single human being and it suits them just fine.

Caesar (Andy Serkis) has reunited the apes in their impressive world of peace and balance. Among those he reunited are the apes from "Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes" like the orangutan Maurice (Karim Konoval), the loyal chimp Rocket (Terry Notary) and Cornelia (Judy Greer). Cornelia is now Caesar's wife and they have two children, Blue Eyes (Nick Thurston) and a brand-new baby.

The members of Caesar's community are multiethnic as Hollywood Reporter calls them. In addition to the apes, there are the orangutans, gorillas and bonobos among others. They communicate through sign language that is cleverly translated via subtitles.

Some of the members are expert horsemen. This is witnessed on the initial action scene in which the apes are seen savagely attacking some elk and then battle a large bear.

Despite the peace in their world, there is tension between Caesar and Koba.

Koba is the chimpanzee who replaced Caesar as the primary test subject on ALZ-113 in the second half of the film. He is all scarred up and obviously used to the routine of being cut and poked and tortured.

The torture had obviously damaged him not just physically but also emotionally. The anger he felt towards the humans is unlike Caesar's that he can't see any good in them. For Koba the only good human is a dead human.

Although guns are supposed to be locked up, Koba can't help himself as his character, described by Hollywood Reporter, is a trigger-happy type and a troublemaker.

Koba is a hindrance to Caesar's attempts at a truce with the humans. He slowly opposes Caesar and eventually overthrows him as leader. He then leads an army of apes armed with artilleries to battle against the humans led by Dreyfus (Gary Oldman). Dreyfus blames the apes for the simian virus that wiped out majority of the human race on earth however his background as a lawman does nothing to prepare him for the battle against the apes.

The big showdown in "Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes" betwen humans and apes happens in a trashed rendition of California in the market streets of downtown San Francisco, where the scene features quite a few frightening, suspenseful and awesome sights.
