De La Hoya Says Amir Khan Is One Win Away From A Fight With Mayweather Or Pacquiao
Oscar De La Hoya has said in a recent interview that Bolton-born boxer Amir Khan could fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Manny Pacquiao in 2015. However, the catch is Khan should first beat Devon Alexander in December if he really wants to score a fight with boxing champions.
Speaking to ESPN, Golden Boy Promotions President De La Hoya said that he is looking forward the Khan will get a shot at Mayweather's unbeaten record. He said that Khan has been longing to score a fight not only with Mayweather, but with some of the biggest names in boxing and he thinks that Khan deserves it.
"This is a tough fight that neither can look past but obviously the big prize is Pacquiaos of this world and the Mayweathers of this world," De La Hoya said. "There is a lot on the line, this is high stakes."
Khan has opted to fight Alexander in hopes that a victory over the International Boxing Federation (IBF) welterweight champion can open the opportunity of facing either Mayweather or Pacquiao in the boxing ring. The fight is scheduled to take place on December 13 at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas.
During the press conference for the fight held at The Conga Room on November 4 as told by Boxingnews24, Khan revealed how his upcoming battle is very important for him. Khan said he is "100 percent focused" on the fight. He added that Mayweather is his motivation to work harder for the fight.
According to Khan, a victory over Alexander will open up great doors for him. He bragged about successfully beating Luiz Collazo, who is also a southpaw like Alexander, in his last fight. The British boxer said that he needs to put on a good show against Alexander so he can secure a fight with Mayweather.
Alexander, on the other hand, is also determined to win. Alexander said he has no problems being called the underdog. He will come to Vegas to prove to everybody that he is great fighter. As for his plan on how he can beat Khan, Alexander said he will do everything to the best of his ability to secure victory.
