Defending Champion Grigor Dimitrov Makes Early Commitment To Aegon Championships At Queen’s Club
The 2015 Aegon Championships will hold its 112th edition from June 15 to June 21. The tournament, which is part of the Association of Tennis Professionals, or ATP, World Tour 500 series events, is played on outdoor grass courts. Grigor Dimitrov has confirmed his participation at Queen's Club in a bid to defend the title, which he won last season.
Speaking via Queen's Club's official site, Dimitrov said that he has maintained great working relationship with the people at Aegon Championships. He remains grateful after having awarded two wild cards in the tournament until he won his first Aegon Championships title in 2014, which he said was one of the most unforgettable moments in his career so far. Dimitrov said he is happy to be back at Queen's Club and defend his title in front of the enthusiastic British tennis fans in June.
In 2014, Dimitrov captured his first ATP grass-court title at Queen's Club. He defeated Feliciano Lopez in a gripping final, 6-7(8), 7-6(1), 7-6(6).
Aside from Dimitrov, British World No. 1 Andy Murray has also made an early commitment to Aegon Championshiops. Murray is a three-time champion in the event, having won the tournament in 2009, 2011 and 2013. Murray will bid for a fourth title at Queen's Club.
Murray, who was crushed by Radek Stepanek in the third round match last year, said that he is looking forward to winning the tournament again. Murray added that the Queen's Club event would be a great preparation for Wimbledon.
"Andy and Grigor are two of the best players in the world, our two most recent champions and they are hugely popular with our spectators," tournament director Stephen Farrow said. "Both have a long association with the event and we are very much looking forward to welcoming them again to the Aegon Championships in June."
Currently, both Dimitrov and Murray are in Australia for the 2015 Australian Open. The two, along with other tennis stars, are in the final stages of their preparation for the Grand Slam of the Asia Pacific, which kicks off on Jan. 19.
