Dell, a known PC maker announced that the company would be putting a stop in their Inspiron line of netbooks.

Many customers were concerned because the Inspiron Mino 1018 and the Mini 1012 netbook were suddenty not featured in Dell's website. A sales representative also confirmed that no Dell mini models were currently on sale and instead suggested alternatives such as the Dell Insprion 11z that is also sold in Dell's website (limited quantities for US$399). This is not the first time Dell had made any cancellations regarding its products. Dell earlier announced the cancellation of the company's Streak tablets. Last Feb. 2011, the company also made a decision to cancel the 9-inch and 12-inch Dell Inspiron Minis before settling on the decision to launch the Inspiron Mini 10s.

There are two factors which contributed to the Mini's demise. One of which is Dell's commitment to maximize its "profit share" as oppose to "market share". Dell also mentioned that the company would focus "on products that are both bigger in size, and in profits". This means that Dell would concentrate on higher margin products offered by the company. This would also mean that the company would only be promoting three brands namely the Inspiron, the high-end XPS notebook, and the Alienware enthusiast models. Dell is currently offering consumer notebooks that are not priced lower than US$499. The second factor identified that contributed with the cancellation of the Mini line was the fact that the Mini netbook line had a strong similarity with a notebook. Despite its strong similarity, netbook lacks the performance and features of a powerful notebook which makes customers less than satisfied with the product.

Netbooks were considered as the "next big thing" before and companies like Dell wanted to capitalize on this fad. The demand for netbooks declined when powerful tablets like Apple's iPad and Android-based tablets entered the market. There are also tablets in the market that offers additional features that enables the tablet to function as a netbook. Most customers are more drawn to the features that the tablet offers as opposed to the features offered by Netbooks.
