“I’m going to prison or death sentence for killing my wife. Love you guys. Miss you guys. Take care. Facebook people you’ll see me in the news,” posted Derek Medina on facebook after he shot and killed his wife, Jennifer Alfonso, 26. The event took place early morning AEST.
In a telling story of today's near-manic obsession with social sharing and social networks, the young man from Miami seemed eager to tell the facebook community online that he killed his wife. Worse than that, he also wanted to share pictures of the gruesome event and the corpse with his friends.
It seems quite lackadaisical to Medina that such a thing could occur and that it could be perceived as something so mundane.
Medina was an e-book writer and made more than 140 YouTube videos about martial arts and his family. He was also an advocate of improvement and one of his ebooks was titled, How I Saved Someone's Life and Marriage and Family Problems Thru Communication, The Miami New Times reports.
Lack of Remorse
To most rational individuals, this would be a stage of horror or at least a state of shock or remorse over killing a person in cold blood.
Validating his actions, Medina said that prior to the tragic incident, the couple had an argument when he had pulled out a gun. He put it away until another round of quarrels took place, said an online report by The Australian
CNN reported a detailed account of his testimony to the Miami Dade police:
" He and his wife argued. He pulled a gun on her. She threatened to leave him. He put the gun away and followed her. She unloaded a volley of punches on him. He fetched the gun again. She pulled a knife. He wrestled it out of her hands. She punched him again. Then he shot her "multiple times."
Child Present
Another disturbing detail about this domestic abuse problem gone wrong is that a 10-year-old child was reportedly at home when the shooting took place. She is Alfonso's child from a previous relationship. The couple had been married for a year, reports CBS News.
Adding to that inconsistency is that viewers and friends on facebook kept sharing the photo of the deceased though they posted that Medina' s act of posting the photo was disgusting.
On a corporate level, facebook reportedly ran the conversation on the social media site for around five hours. Facebook later took down Medina's posts on request by police officers.
So does that mean that facebook was trying to drive in traffic? Or is it fair to say that this couple had no shot at a stable relationship due to chance events or inevitable circumstances.
CBS Miami reported a statement by Facebook which said,: "The content was reported to us. We took action on the profile - removing the content and disabling the profile, and we reached out to law enforcement. We take action on all content that violates our terms, which are clearly laid out on our site. As this is an ongoing law enforcement investigation, I would refer you to the authorities in Florida for any additional details."
The Miami police have not said anything about the Facebook posts linked to the crime.
But as social media commentators, we share in someone else's unfortunate loss. And this is a revealing stage of our progress on the Internet. We can't tell the difference between what should be socially networked and what is private and personal. The inability to differentiate between these broad range of choices leaves a glaring impact on our society.
Derek Medina's suspected crime is apalling and his casual approach to the value of life is equally distrubing, but it is still an event that reflects the spread of domestic violence and disrespect for family values.
In a similar case in May, the facebook account of Latrice Maze, 26, was changed, giving police a clue that she had been missing. The mother of five had disappeared since March 19 and her facebook account was changed on March 29.
According to police, she was killed, and put into an incinerator by her boyfriend Jahleel Hoskins and dumped in a landfill. Hoskins was charged for Maze's murder later in May
