'The Descendants': What The Critics Have To Say About Clooney's Latest Film [FEATURE]
George Clooney plays the role of an impassive father set in Hawaii who is shocked with a severe family crisis. This is the simple yet moving plot of 'The Descendants' which fared well in various film festivals and receives numerous predictions to be nominated for the Oscars.
The reviews of the most in demand movie and entertainment critics have remained to be all consistently positive.
Betsy Sharkey from The Times describes the movie as related to director Alexander Payne's "Smart, Sardonic Sensibility." She was also very impressed with the great match up of the filmmaker with its cinematographer in showing the amazing setting of Hawaii.
Apart from a solid cast, she thinks that Clooney really stood out from everyone in the film with his superb acting as a harried dad.
Peter Travers from Rolling Stone magazine says that there is nothing wrong he can get to spot with the movie. All that he is sure of is that it would be on top of the list for the best films of 2011.
The plot may seem like a flop but the delivery of humour and heartbreak combined as delivered by everyone accordingly makes it such a big hit.
While according to Claudia Puig from USA Today, the most notable performances in the movie are that of Woodley and Clooney. She is not turned off by the VOs of the film and only thinks that the narrations just make it even more a profound work of art.
With all these and more, it cannot be denied that this is one major comeback for Alexander Payne with having done 'Sideways' as his last film. "Only a narrative artist capable of comedy is truly capable of pathos," he said on explaining the film's level of sensibility.
As for Clooney, it was the intense vulnerability of the script that made him take the role. As of the character he plays, he can only say of one thing: "He loses to everybody."
