After much speculation and much bigger fanfare, season 2 has been confirmed for “Designated Survivor.” Fans can expect the same action and tension that’s been brewing from within the oval, but there will be some changes. New characters are set to be introduced while Mr. President is again in a lot of trouble.

Spoiler alert! This article contains “Designated Survivor” spoilers. Read on if you would like to know what happens next before the next episode airs.

ABC’s political thriller is once again replacing the showrunner for “Designated Survivor.” The fourth showrunner will be Keith Eisner, who has had prior experience on “The Good Wife.” His other previous work include “NYPD Blue,” “Law and Order” and “Gilmore Girls.” Before the show was renewed for a second season, showrunner Jeff Melvoi left the job.

The original showrunner was Amy B. Harris who was immediately replaced with Harmon Feldman after the pilot episode was released, writes Den of Geek. Feldman left in December right after coming with a deal with ABC Studios.

There are several major positive takeaways for “Designated Survivor” in its first season. It was the strongest of the new Wednesday entries and opened with a 2.3 in 18-49 and 10 million viewers at the 10 p.m. slot. While it went down to 2.2 at the end part, it was still considered to have performed tremendously. It beat other shows in the 10 p.m. category including “Chicago PD” and “Big Brother.”

A big part of the show’s success could be attributed to “24” veteran Kiefer Sutherland, who happens to be the executive producer and star of the show. Sutherland plays the former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development who gets elected as president after a terrorist attack devastates the White House and kills everybody in the line of succession before him.

Viewers follow Sutherland’s character as he deal with internal issues in the White House. Terror will brew from within as his own Vice President came up with plots against him. Later on, he gets shot but fortunately, such was not fatal. Fans get to see that the presidency is more than just what it seems in this one of a kind political thriller by ABC.

There has been no news for now as to when “Designated Survivor” will be back on TV, but sources say that fans should expect it in September 2017. Keep checking online for updates regarding the show’s return. “Designated Survivor” airs on NBC. It also airs on Netflix US and Netflix Australia.
