'Desperate Housewives,' 'David Letterman' effective tool against extremism
American television series Desperate Housewives proves to be an effective tool against jihad, according to a Wikileaks Cable. Along with David Letterman, and Friends, which stars Jennifer Aniston, Desperate Housewives are said to be more effective in winning the hearts of Muslim youth against extremist in Saudi Arabia.
"It's still all about the War of Ideas, and the American programming on [privately-owned] MBC and Rotana, is winning over ordinary Saudis in a way that 'Al Hurra' and other U.S. propaganda never could," the source said in a cable called David Letterman: Agent of Influence.
"Saudis are now very interested in the outside world, and everybody wants to study in the U.S. if they can. They are fascinated by U.S. culture in a way they never were before."
According to the report, Desperate Housewives apparently showcases the comfort of capitalism and David Letterman features ability to poke fun at the government something that is supressed by many governments in the Middle-East.
As part of this war on Ideas, the Saudi Arabian government permits the satellite broadcasts of US programming with Arabic subtitles over the privately Middle East Broadcasting group (MBC) as way to counter extremists.
