Devina DeDiva: Megan Young’s Basher Won’t Apologize, Decries Cyber Bullying
Devina DeDiva, the infamous Facebook basher of 2013 Miss World Megan Young, has apparently no plans to make a public apology after her insensitive comments drew the ire of netizens around the world last week.
DeDiva, whose real name is Devina Sharma, absorbed tremendous backlash from internet users on various social networking sites after her racist comments directed towards Young and her Filipino heritage went viral in a span of just hours.
"Miss Philippines is Miss World? What a joke? I didn't know those maids have anything else in them. Hahaha," Sharma posted on her Twitter account.
Sharma's controversial posting instantly triggered uproar among internet users especially Filipinos, whom she called unprivileged, smelly and uneducated.
Initial reports indicated Sharma was an Indian working as a labtech in Singapore and studying in a school affiliated with Manchester University. However, it was later revealed that Sharma was an assistant teacher and she reportedly lost her job after the school's superiors, who happened to be Filipinos, learned the news.
Manchester University also cleared that it never had a student named Devina DeDiva.
"Manchester University (Indiana, USA) has been mistakenly associated with an individual Devina DeDiva today after she made racist comments regarding the recently crowned Miss World from the Philippines. To clear up any confusion, the University has confirmed that Devina DeDiva has never been a student at Manchester University.
Moreover, Sharma is also facing a possible jail term of up to three years and a fine not more than $5,000 after a Filipino named Anthony Benedicto filed a police case in Singapore for violating the country's strict law against racism.
"The police is still investigating on this matter and are verifying her acts. I believe she might be charged under the Sedition Act. Again, that is pending investigations and confirmation from the Police," Benedicto said in an interview with IBT Australia Edition.
Still, Sharma stood firm in her stance not to make any apology, believing she's a victim of cyber bullying.
"Source said Devina "erased her messages." She cannot issue public apology because "she feels victimized by cyber bullying," Philippine Inquirer Entertainment posted on its twitter account.
According to Philippine Inquirer, Sharma "Had bad experience & generalized" and was even "afraid to go out in the streets."
