In Dexter Season 8 premiere, Hannah McKay is present only in pre-episode rewind and post-episode spoiler. Debra Morgan, Hannah's rival for Dexter's attention, is starting a new chapter in her life. But it doesn't mean that these two femme fatale characters are not going to pick up where they left off. Here's an overview of the characters in the premiere:

Dexter Morgan. It's a beautiful day for the serial killer at the start of the premiere. He flies kite with Harrison, he's coached his son's soccer team, too. He's back on track, he says. But he's missing Deb. He realises his life will soon fall apart without her. Towards the end of the episode, he's seen terrifying Harrision with a scream the child rarely (if not never) hears.

Debra Morgan. She's in another job, another place, and she's spiralling downhill - out of Miami police, out of control. In Dexter Season 7 finale, she saves Dexter from a very certain doom. But she's paying a huge price for it. (Side trivia: Dexter guesses her online credit card account password. What else: f*ckingpassword.) She later tells Dexter, "I shot the wrong person in that trailer."

Hannah McKay. She's not in Dexter Season 8 premiere, but her orchid gets a special screen time - just when Dexter is seen making new friends - in bed. From the post-episode trailer, it looks like she will be back in Episode 2.

LaGuerta. She gets a concrete bench from Miami Police in a memorial ceremony. Batista doesn't like how "cold" the bench was in relation to his late friend's dedication to the service.

Masuka. He shows Batista he finds it sweet that he still hasn't moved past the tragedy of LaGuerta's death. But Masuka clearly doesn't feel the same. Life moves on for him. Spoilers indicate viewers will see a bigger side of Masuka this season. He's thrilled to have The Psychopath Whisperer in Miami Police.

Batista. In Dexter Season 7, he's done with police/detective work. He' bought a restaurant in part with Quinn's money. He sees some LaGuerta's stuff, showing she was tracking Dexter shortly before she died. He was not alarmed. Instead, he asks Dexter to forgive the late captain. Dexter says, "It's complicated." Very much so.

Aimee and Quinn. Jamie, Harrison's nanny and Batista's sister, is now with Quinn. She's crazy about him, leaving Harrison in Dexter's care to get some night out. Quinn, meanwhile, is helping Deb in her assignments.

The Psychopath Whisperer. Psychopaths don't have empathy, she tells Miami Police. She's interested in the new case because the killer removes a part of the brain that deals with empathy. The spoiler in next episode's trailer indicates Dr Vogel has a relationship with this season's Miami Police target. Dexter definitely doesn't want her attention, but he later finds out she knows more about him than himself.

Crimes. Someone's killing people, slicing their skull open, and scooping out a portion of their brain - the portion that enables humans to empathise. Little is known about him, which means he will be a recurring character in next episodes. Meanwhile, in Debra's private investigation, she draws the attention of a hitman who was going to kill her fake boyfriend, had Dexter not done the deed.
