Diablo 3, Starcraft 2, World Of Warcraft Troubleshooting Connection: Step By Step Guide Using A Trace Route
Recent reports revealed that many players are affect by a major lag in Blizzard’s famous game Diablo 3. Running a trace route can determine connection issue of computers to a specified target location usable for Starcraft 2 and World of Warcraft as well.
Warning: Running a trace route on your computer requires usage of Command Window and Administrator rights. The following instructions will also detail information about certain IP addresses to determine connection issues.
Windows Computers: Here are the instructions on how to run a trace route on Windows desktop and laptop computers. Make sure that you have Administrator rights on the machine to run a trace route.
1. Click the Start button and type CMD on the search field. Windows 8 computers will automatically search when typing CMD after pressing the Start button or the Windows key on the keyboard.
2. Right-click on the CMD.exe and then select “Run as Administrator.” This is required to perform a trace route.
3. Type in “tracert xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx > c:tracert.txt” (exclude the quotation marks) and then press the Enter key. Replace the xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx with the appropriate server address by clicking here. Use all IP addresses available for your region. Be patient as the trace route could take several minutes before completion.
4. After the trace route, a file will be generated in the hard drive called “tracert.txt” containing essential information. Type in “exit” w/o the quotation marks and press the Enter key to close the Command Window.
Mac OS X Machines: For Mac OS X machines, the Terminal application will be used in order to perform a trace route. It is located in the “/Applications/Utilities” folder of the computer.
1. Type in “traceroute xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx > ~/Desktop/tracert.txt” (exclude the quotation marks) and press the Return key. Replace the xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx with the appropriate server address listed on this link. Use all IP addresses available for your region. Similar with Windows, be patient and let the machine complete the trace route process.
2. A file called “tracert.txt” will be generated on the desktop after the trace route process.
3. Type in “exit” w/o the quotation marks and then press the Return key to close the Terminal.
Time-outs, *symbols, if the number value before the ms jumps from a low number to high number and if the number stay at high values could indicate issue with the connection between the server and the machine. These details are found on the “tracert.txt” file created on the hard drive in Windows computers and on the desktop in Mac OS X machines. When reporting connection issues, Blizzard technical support may request other specific system files or running a pathping for diagnosis purposes.
