Move over Avengers, there's a new badass in town.

The Dictator, bannered by comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, has made a coup d'état at the Australian box office, grabbing the number one spot from the summer favorite, The Avengers.

The comedy snagged a $5.09 million during its first weekend, 2 million dollars more than the fourth week earnings of the superhero ensemble movie.

The Dictator stars comedian and director, Sacha Baron Cohen, as the titular dictator, the fictional Admiral General Hafez Aladeen. As the movie trailer synopsis goes, the movie is about the story "of a dictator who risked his life to ensure that democracy would never come to the country he lovingly oppressed". The movie was distributed by Paramount Pictures and directed by Larry Charles, who also directed Cohen's Bruno and Borat.

Meanwhile, the Tim Burton-Johnny Depp reunion movie, vampire comedy Dark Shadows, was turned back to number three slot with earnings of $2.18 million in its second week. Coming in at fourth place is The Five-Year Engagement , followed by Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe's horror debut, The Woman in Black, at number five.

The figures were tallied by Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia.

Completing the top ten list are: The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel at number six. It stars Dame Judy Dench. The movie pushed back action star Jason Statham's latest flick, Safe, into number seven. Salmon Fishing held on to its eighth spot.

The Way found its path to the top 10 for the first time at number 9, and last but not the least, local thriller Wish You Were Here firmly sits at the number 10 spot.

Meanwhile, earlier movies have shown their last gasp of air. The Lucky One, The Hunger Games, and Act of Valour have all dropped out of the list.

The Dictator is now showing in cinemas nationwide.
