Diego Costa Explains Why He Left Atletico for Chelsea FC
Atlético Madrid's star striker Diego Costa is leaving the Spanish champions for English Premiere League Club Chelsea next season after coming off a very successful season which saw Atlético take the La Liga title and reach the UEFA Champions League final. The question is , why would a player leave a very successful team where he is clearly a star in favour of another? Goal.com were able to get an exclusive interview with the Spanish international striker while he was in Brazil competing in the World Cup.
The Brazilian-born striker said that he was motivated to move to Chelsea out of his desire to play for "one of the greatest clubs in the world."
Jose Mourinho has made it clear in recent months that he is keen on signing a strong striker this summer to back up or perhaps replace Fernando Torres. Backed up with Roman Abramovich and his endless resources, Chelsea were able to meet the striker's release clause demands from Atlético to the tune of £35.
"Why would I have chosen to play for Chelsea? It is a thing that is about to happen. Things are going in a direction and, if they keep going as they are going, it is the team I will play for in the next season. I've wanted to play in the Premier League for a while. Chelsea are one of the greatest clubs of the world so there are many factors that make you take a decision like this."
Costa's career has been long despite being only 25 years old, he has represented top-tier clubs such as Portugal's Sporting Brag and Penafiel as well as Spanish clubs Celta Vigo, Albacete, Valladolid, Rayo Vallecano and Atletico Madrid where he was finally able to shine and catch the attention of Jose Mourinho and Chelsea.
Not exactly a well-loved charismatic player, Costa walked out on the pitch in Spain's opening game for the World Cup last Friday, he was met with jeers and boos from the crowd. Costa was born in Brazil and had even represented Brazil before but chose to eventually play for Spain. This irked many Brazilians and they were not afraid to show it.
"In Spain it happens to me in every stadium I play so I'm pretty much accustomed to it. I had my right of choice so it's the same for the public, they have the right to choose to boo me. When you are on the pitch you don't think about those things. I saw it coming; I knew it was going to happen so I had my head ready for that," said Costa.
Blues fans are looking forward to an overhaul in their line up next season and a chance to wrestle the title away from holders Manchester City and Diego Costa's addition to the team might be a crucial element. If he does help Chelsea bring home some silverware, then perhaps he will be hearing a lot more cheers that boos next season.
