Rat Sandwich

Asking for extra spinach for his Italian Sub sandwich ordered on Oct 6 from a Subway outlet in Oregon help spare Matt Jones from eating veggies which was the playground of a mouse. To his horror, the restaurant staff gave in to his request and scooped the last spinach out of the tub.

It had a small rat. When Jones, an assistant project manager at FD Thomas, checked the same sandwich that his friend Jay ordered, there was also a mouse!

As evidence of the unwanted addition to Jay’s sandwich, Jones took a photo of his friend’s aborted meal and posted the image on his Facebook account, reports Telegraph. While Jones sees humour in the incident and calls the “rat sandwich” the funniest thing he has ever seen, he also thinks it is the most disgusting thing because Jay could have bitten into his sandwich and have a bit of the rat, while he could also have ingested mice-flavoured spinach.

However, health officials assured that eating spinach where a rodent walked has little chance of making the unfortunate diner sick. According to Cheryl Connell, director of Lincoln County Health and Human Services, after consultation with doctors, “although it is not very appetizing, the risk of someone becoming sick due to eating lettuce with those particular circumstances were very low.”

But the department immediately inspected Subway in Lincoln, Oregon, for mice droppings and other dead rats. Connell said that the rat was not inside the restaurant but probably came from the bagged spinach product. Subway sanitised and cleansed its premises immediately.

Subway apologised to the two diners who surely lost their appetite and gave them a full refund. Jones, nevertheless, wrote to Subway main office to complain so the incident won’t be repeated.

In a statement, Subway said, “To be cautious all of the products in the sandwich unit were disposed of and a thorough cleaning took place, in which the Health Department gave the restaurant a clean bill of health. There were no other complaints made and this was an isolated incident.”

A few months ago, a similar incident happened involving KFC when a male diner thought he was served fried rat. However, upon lab test of the meat, it was confirmed to be a chicken. It only looked like a rodent because of the shape which includes what looks like a long tail.
