Fats, bones, ligaments and blood vessels - all these will be mixed to create the all-time favorite chicken nuggets.

Dr. Richard DeShazo, a pediatrician, and Medico-legal Steven Bigler from the University of Mississippi Medical Center closely examined the sampled chicken nuggets. These were reportedly taken from two large fastfood chains in the U.S.

Researchers found 50 percent of each nugget is made from thigh meat while the other 50 percent is composed of chicken by-products such as bones, blood vessels, fats, ligaments and brain tissues.

DeShazo and Bigler were reportedly "speechless" and "amazed" of their findings, according to BILD. DeShazo described the food item as a mixture of chicken leftovers and fat in a salty breading.

He added, calling them as chicken nuggets is misleading since the nuggets are composed of more fat particles than real chicken meat. In reality, according to DeShazo, chicken nuggets are more of a chicken by-product food item with "lots of calories, salt, sugar, and fat."

The National Chicken Council, an organization that represents chicken meat products in the U.S., denied the claims of DeShazo and Bigler stressing that chicken nuggets are "an excellent source of protein especially for kids."

DeShazo lambasted the statement from the National Chicken Council saying it is a dangerous claim.

Nutrition expert Sven-David Muller, author of "Die 50 besten und die 50 gefahrlichsten Lebensmittel" (50 Best and 50 Most Dangerous Food Items), did not find the results of Bigler's and DeShazo's study surprising.

Muller said while the parts being used still come from the chicken, consumers should note that almost every part, if not all parts, is used to make chicken nuggets.

The study also claimed that almost every part of the chicken is included in the mixture, whatever the manufacturers can carve from the bone.

A spokesman from fastfood chain McDonald's said the chain only uses chicken breast for their Chicken McNuggets. KFC also gave the same response after being asked about their Filet Bites. Burger King told BILD that the franchise only uses spiced breast fillet for its King Nuggets.
