Disney’s new princess 'Moana' continues no prince charming trend
Disney is set to bury its past and continues to snub princes out of this generation’s fairy tales. Directors John Musker and Ron Clements confirmed that Disney’s new heroine Moana is among the list of Disney princesses who don't have any love interest.
According to Entertainment Weekly, directors Musker and Clements confirmed the news of Moana’s nil romance during the Comic Convention held in San Diego. The duo said that “Moana” focuses on how the character sets on a journey to find herself. As such, until Moana finds herself, she won’t have the time to find a love interest anytime soon.
The two directors, whose previous works include “Aladdin,” “The Little Mermaid,” and “Hercules,” also supposedly surprised fans during the convention with several clips from “Moana.” The plot for the animation was also discussed during the event.
“Moana” will tell the story of the 16-year-old titular character, who goes on a journey to search for a banished demi god named Maui. The story is set 2,000 years ago and features the beautiful islands and sea in the South Pacific. Moana is voiced by newcomer Auli’i Cravalho, 15-year-old native Hawaiian, while the banished demi god named Maui is voiced by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
Typical of animated movies from Walt Disney Animation Studios, “Moana” will also have a touch of musicals, featuring magical songs that are highly anticipated by fans. Lin-Manual Miranda from “Hamilton” is one of “Moana’s” composers, and reportedly, he’s got a song specially prepared for “The Rock” to sing in the film.
“Moana” follows the current power female trend of Disney with the likes of Merida from “Brave” and Elsa from “Frozen.” What today's Disney princesses seem to prove is that happy endings isn’t about finding prince charming, but about more important matters like family and their own individual worth.
“Moana” is slated to hit Australian theatres on Dec. 26.
