Scott Derrickson's "Doctor Strange" is a highly anticipated Marvel movie that is expected to come out in 2016. Casting rumours about the role of the superhero, who is also known as Sorcerer Supreme, are running rampant. According to the latest update, Ryan Gosling is in the line to star as the mysterious Marvel superhero Doctor Strange.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the big news on Oct. 15, 2014. According to the report, in past few weeks, the Canadian actor held meetings with the moviemakers at Marvel Studios to discuss the role that he might be taking up as his next big project. It's just a matter of time, before fans know for sure who would be starring as the central character in "Doctor Strange."

The news comes hard on the heels of reports that claimed the studios is considering "Gladiator" actor Joaquin Phoenix for the role of Doctor Strange. In its previous report, the abovementioned Hollywood news publication revealed that Joaquin Phoenix was "in talks" but the deal "never came to fruition."

However, it seems Ryan Gosling and Joaquin Phoenix are one of the many actors in the running for the Doctor Strange role. According to the report, Jared Leto and Theroux "have been chasing the role." At the same time, names of Ethan Hawke and Keanu Reeves also surfaced over the period of time. Furthermore, Tom Hardy and Benedict Cumberbatch were also once considered for the role of Doctor Strange.

In the Marvel Comics, Doctor Strange--whose real name is Doctor Stephen Vincent Strange--was formerly a neurosurgeon. However, later he takes up the task of protecting the Earth from evil by using his mastery over magic.

Besides the role of Doctor Strange, actor Ryan Gosling is also reportedly being eyed for another comic book based role. The actor is the frontrunner for a role in "Suicide Squad," the movie that is said to be based on DC Comics supervillains' team up. The report notes that David Ayer's "Suicide Squad's" script is still in works. Some other actors who are being considered for the role in the Warner Bros movie are Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Tom Hardy. It is noted that Warners have not yet commented on the reports. At the same time, it is reported that "there is no guarantee that Ryan Gosling will spark to any of these projects."

Ryan Gosling is also being considered for a role in "The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America's First Superhero."

Meanwhile, Daily Mail notes that the movie "Doctor Strange" was announced by Kevin Feige, the Marvel Studios president, in January 2013. The film is expected to begin production in May 2015 and hit the theaters on July 18, 2016. According to IMDB, Doctor Strange's career is totally ruined before he is rescued by a masterful sorcerer, who teaches him the skills that will help Doctor protect the world from evil forces.
