‘Doctor Strange': Kevin Feige talks Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sorcerer Supreme powers, ‘The Eye of Agamotto’ time travel

Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sorcerer Supreme Doctor Strange will be wearing The Eye of Agamotto when he plays the titular role of the mystical superhero in 2016. The actor was seen wearing the medallion in his first character photo released recently. According to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, the piece of jewellery is very important to the Sorcerer Supreme since it can provide him vast powers, including time manipulation.

Feige confirmed during an interview with Entertainment Weekly that time travel will be featured in “Doctor Strange.” He told the publication that the Sorcerer Supreme’s signature statement piece, called in the Marvel comics as “The Eye of Agamotto,” holds very special and dangerous powers which will be explored in the film.

“In this film, the Eye is a very important relic that can be quite dangerous if used in the wrong hands because it has the ability to do a number of things, the most dangerous of which is it can sort of manipulate probabilities. It's also another way of saying, ‘screw around with time’ — which is part of our story,” he told Entertainment Weekly.

In the exclusive “Doctor Strange” interview, Feige also talked about Cumberbatch’s Sorcerer Supreme powers. Aside from “The Eye of Agamotto,” Strange also wears the red cape, called the Cloak of Levitation. The cape gives the Sorcerer Supreme the ability to fly in a “wholly unique and wholly original way” unlike Thor and Superman, Feige told Entertainment Weekly.

The head of Marvel Studios also described the yellow streaks of light Cumberbatch’s Sorcerer Supreme is seen wielding from his hands in the first character photo released for “Doctor Strange.” He called the sparks as “mandalas of light” which Strange reportedly uses both as his shield and as his weapons.

Feige said the movie will basically just focus a lot on the Sorcerer Supreme’s powers. Among the other mystical powers that Doctor Strange reportedly possesses include creating portals that he can go through to get to another dimension or other places in the world.

Cumberbatch’s Sorcerer Supreme will reportedly be providing “mind-trip action” sequences in the film. “Doctor Strange” director Scott Derrickson previously said that the movie will give viewers a mind-blowing experience.
