‘Doctor Who’ 50th Anniversary Special To Be Shown In 3-D In Australia And New Zealand
Aussie and Kiwi “Doctor Who” fans won’t have to settle for their TV screens when the show’s 50th anniversary special airs in November. BBC has announced that the British television show will be showing in 3-D at selected cinemas around Australia and New Zealand.
“Day of the Doctor” will feature outgoing Time Lord Matt Smith (11th Doctor) and his predecessor David Tennant (10th Doctor) with their companions Jenna Coleman and Billie Piper.
The 75-minute episode is scheduled to screen in the UK on television screens on November 23, 50 years after the first episode aired on BBC.
In Australia and New Zealand, however, fans are set to watch it on a bigger screen. It will be shown in 3-D at Hoyts, 19 Events, Dendy, Village, and Rialto cinemas around the countries on November 24.
Though the plot of the highly anticipated show is still being kept under wraps, one thing is for sure, multiple BAFTA Awards recipient John Hurt will be playing as the unknown regeneration of the Doctor.
Viewers are already familiar with Hurt. He appeared in the series 7 finale in May as The Doctor whom the other Doctors blocked from their minds when he “broke the promise.”
Also starring in the special are the Time Lord’s classic opponents like the Zygons, the Daleks, and the Cybermen.
“Doctor Who is a British TV institution and we’re delighted to have the opportunity to screen this very special episode at cinemas nationwide so fans are able to enjoy the episode in full 3-D,” Head of Marketing for BBC Worldwide Australia and New Zealand, Sharon Wilson, said.
Smith will leave the show after the Christmas special. His successor, the 12th Doctor, will be Peter Capaldi, who has appeared in the show in 2008 as Caecilius, whom the 10th Doctor (Tennant) encountered in ancient Pompeii.
