“Doctor Who” is coming to Australia New Zealand in the form of a gold coin. Under the official license of BBC Australian and New Zealand, the cult British sci-fi series will be releasing a limited edition 50th Doctor Who 50th Anniversary 1oz gold coin in October.

After the overwhelming response on the 50th Anniversary Doctor Who 1oz Silver coin in June, New Zealand Mint is now offering a limited edition gold coin with a very exclusive mintage of only 250 coins.

Each coin has an engraved relief of the iconic TARDIS with the engraved words “DOCTOR WHO 50th Anniversary 1963-2013.” On its reverse side is the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

It will be presented in a wooden coin case, and can be displayed using the elevating coin insert. It will also coin with a gold foiled Certificate of Authenticity.

The coin, which has proof quality and is made of 99.9 per cent pure gold, is issued by the New Zealand Mint and is considered legal tender under the authority of Niue Island. It has a nominal value of $200, but is expected to retail for around $3000.

In Australia, the 50th Anniversary Doctor Who gold coin will be distributed by the Perth Mint.

Shipping for the item will begin on September 30.

Also, in October, New Zealand Mint will be releasing the limited edition Doctor Who 1/2oz silver coins.

“Doctor Who” commenced airing in 1963 in British television. It centres on the adventures of a time-travelling humanoid alien known as the Doctor and his companion. Various actors have already played the title character, with Matt Smith currently holding the title.

He is set to be replaced by Peter Capaldi after Smith leaves after the Christmas Special.

But first, the show’s 50th Anniversary Special, titled “The Day of the Doctor,” will air on November 23, with Smith and his predecessor, David Tennant, co-starring together.
