‘Doctor Who’ sage wisdom passed between companions: Jenna Coleman reveals crucial advice she gave to Pearl Mackie
“Doctor Who” companions, like the Gallifreyan Time Lords themselves, don’t last in the show. They are even replaced faster than the Doctors even though they do just as much, if not more, work. That’s why they help one another by passing on a crucial piece of advice. Former companion Jenna Coleman has revealed what that is to successor Pearl Mackie.
Coleman, 30, who played Clara Oswald in the long-running UK sci-fi series, told Radio Times how she welcomed Mackie in the show. Clara has already “died” in the last season, and therefore will not meet Mackie’s Bill when the show returns next year.
“I sent her some flowers and a note, and kinda just passed on the wisdom Karen Gillan passed onto me,” she said. Gillan played companion Amelia Pond, who was the Eleventh Doctor’s (Matt Smith) companion before Clara came.
What exactly was that piece of advice, though?
“[It] was the best places to eat in Cardiff,” Coleman said, referring to the Welsh city where “Doctor Who” mostly films. “So you know, the practical, valuable stuff.”
She continued, “And other than that, you know: It’s an adventure and enjoy it. I don’t think Pearl would need any advice from me really.”
“Doctor Who” will return for its Christmas episode in December, and will return for its season 10 in April. Mackie will be introduced as new companion Bill to the Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi). Meanwhile, Coleman, who has appeared in the show for over three years, is excited to watch the show only as a fan.
“I’m quite looking forward to seeing Peter’s Doctor as well, and how it’s changed him. Because that is gonna be really interesting,” she said, adding that she was also looking forward to seeing what Steven Moffat would do this season. Season 10 is Steven Moffat’s last season as showrunner.
Coleman currently stars as Queen Victoria in the new drama “Victoria.”
