Doctor Who is coming to New Zealand! Well, not the Doctor himself, but his music at least. “Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular” will take the stage at the 2014 New Zealand Festival for the first time in Wellington in February.

Fans of the UK BBC series can relive the experience of getting captured by the Daleks and being saved by the Doctor as the captivating music from the long-running sci-fi show is played by a live orchestra.

The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra will be performing composer Murray Gold’s music from the show, and will be accompanied by specially edited sequences of the 11th Doctor’s (Matt Smith) performance on a big screen on stage.

Audiences not only have to look at the stage in front of them as iconic characters from the hit TV series will also invade the aisles while the orchestra plays.

The live music show will appear as part of the New Zealand Festival at the TSB Bank Arena in Wellington for two days from February 21 to 22.

“We’re expecting an invasion from around the country. This show really is spectacular, it dances between fantasy and reality and will appeal to people of all ages, whether they’re theatre regulars, music lovers, or Doctor Who fans old and new,” New Zealand Festival Artistic Director Shelagh Magadza said.

Tickets will go on sale on August 30, with pre-sales available from August 26 via Ticketek.

Smith, who currently plays the Doctor, will be passing the torch to Peter Capaldi when the former leaves the show on the Christmas episode.

Capaldi was announced as the 12th incarnation of the time travelling humanoid alien earlier in August during the live BBC special “Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor.”
