It is not a question whether Adele is ailing, but to what degree. As everyone knows by now, the British songbird was forced to cancel the remainder of her tour and promotional appearances for 2011 so she can undergo throat surgery to fix a problem with her vocal cords.

Unfortunately, her announcement has done little to stem rumors spreading like wildfire on Twitter that the 23-year-old might be suffering from something worse than what her camp admits -- throat cancer.

According to Adele's publicist, rumors that she has been stricken with throat cancer are, in fact, just plain wrong. "We would like to reiterate that Adele is to undergo surgery for a hemorrhaged vocal cords. All reports regarding any other condition are 100 percent false," the representative tells E!News. The illness caused by bleeding due to swelling of the vocal chords is still serious in the sense that it could jeopardize the songstress' beautiful singing voice and her career.

"A hemorrhage left untreated or occurring repeatedly may result in scarring of the vocal folds, which is a condition that is much harder to treat and has permanent effects on voice quality," stated a spokesperson from the Voice Care Center at Duke University.

Adele confirmed earlier that she was suffering, noting that her voice was weakened by a bout of flu from December. The condition worsened until by the time the "Chasing Pavements" chanteuse embarked on her U.S. tour in May. Her voice suddenly switched off like a light and she felt as though there was something ripping in her throat.

Adele's pipes were further weakened due to bouts of laryngitis. The Grammy winner subsequently ended up getting a second opinion and was diagnosed with the hemorrhage, necessitating the operation and what will surely be a lengthy recovery.

"I have absolutely no choice but to recuperate properly and fully, or I risk damaging my voice forever," wrote Adele in an apologetic post to fans.

"Wanting to do something so bad and not being able to is the most frustrating thing as I'm sure you know! My voice is weak and I need to build it back up. I'm gonna be starting up vocal rehab and start building my over all stamina in my voice, body and mind," said Adele. Fans are surely praying for Adele's speedy recovery so that they can hear her sing again with that powerful voice.
