"Downton Abbey," the hugely popular British period drama, is set to introduce new characters and new twists in the new season. The first episode of Season 5 is likely to reveal something that may sadden the viewers, as indicated by Allen Leech, who plays Tom Branson in "Downton Abbey."

In an interview with Radio Times, Allen Leech said that he "found out something" when he read Episode 1 of "Downton Abbey" Season 5, and he was "deeply saddened by it." Without revealing much about the new season, Leech said: "Very exciting stuff happens in episode one and continues into episode two." Also, he hopes that his character finds "peace within himself" in the upcoming seasin.

Recently, Allen also answered some of the fans questions on Twitter. He did not rule out the possibility of Tom Branson getting more involved in politics. When asked if Isobel will play a role when Tom gets into politics, Allen said, "She's always been a big supporter of Tom and that won't change. If he goes into politics she'll be part of it." The actor also indicated that Tom and Rose are likely to have more interactions in the new season.

Earlier the media was abuzz with news that Lady Mary, played by Michelle Dockery, has picked her potential suitor in Season 5. Hollywood Life had reported that Michelle was spotted passionately kissing a known face, which will surprise the Downton fans. The report revealed that Anthony "Tony" Gillingham, played by Tony Cullen, was spotted kissing Lady Mary. According to the report, "things got pretty dramatic. Needless to say, Mabel Lane Fox is not happy about these new shots."

In the upcoming season, there is addition of three new characters. These characters are Simon Bricker, played by Richard E. Grant, Lady Anstruther, played by Anna Chancellor, and Kuragin, played by Rade Sherbedgia.

"Downton Abbey" Season 5 began filming in February. It is expected to premiere sometime in September.
