DreamWorks Pictures is teaming up with Dwayne ' The Rock' Johnson for a new movie, titled "Alpha Squad Seven." Reports published on May 10 disclosed that the movie will be a sci-fi action comedy.

According to Screen Crush, the movie is "like Marvel’s Independence Day as directed by Michael Bay and starring Dwayne Johnson — imagine a human version of Groot with a giant space gun!” The report suggests that the plan is to turn the movie into a franchise. The report also states that writers Jeremiah Friedman (Zoolander) and Nick Palmer (Dockweiler) were behind the pitch. The duo is also set to write the script.

"Alpha Squad Seven" will have Beau Flynn (Hercules) producing via his banner, FlynnPictureCo. Johnson will not just star in the movie but also produce it through his 7 Bucks Productions.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Friedman and Palmer came up with the idea two weeks ago over dinner. The duo pitched the concept to Beau Flynn and his executive Wendy Jacobson as "just a one-line idea." The four later proposed the idea to Johnson and his production company 7 Bucks. The report also states that Johnson and Flynn have worked in three movies together including the 2012’s "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" and 2014's "Hercules." Their latest movie is "San Andreas" which is set to open on May 29. (Watch the trailer below.)

The report added that the project triggered a bidding war between studios. It said that it finally came down to Paramount and DreamWorks with the latter "acting aggressively" to snatch it.

Dwayne Johnson's last released "Furious 7" was a mammoth hit, raking in more than $1 billion world wide. The 43-year-old's next project is an HBO comedy drama, called "Ballers." The series will be produced by Mark Wahlberg and Stephen Levinson who created "Entourage" together. (Watch the trailer below.)

"Ballers" is centered around a group of football players and their families and friends. According to Breaking News, Johnson plays Spencer Strasmore, a retired pro-football player, who is struggling in his new career as a financial advisor. Strasmore identifies with the players and tries to prevent them from making the same mistakes he made.

The show is set in Miami and also stars Rob Corrdry, Omar Benson Miller and Arielle Kebble. The pilot was directed by "Hancock" director Peter Berg. "Ballers" is set to premiere on June 21.
