Drunk Mum Breastfeeds 2-Month-Old Child, Kills Baby
Yadina Morales was so drunk to ever remember what happened after she latched her 2-month old daughter to her breast for their usual breastfeeding. What she can vividly remember was that when she woke up, her baby daughter was underneath her, was already unresponsive and lifeless.
The 22-year-old Ms Morales, from Hagerstown, Washington County, has been charged with manslaughter and second degree child abuse following her own girl's death. She's also slapped with reckless endangerment and other lesser charges. The unfortunate incident occurred on Saturday morning.
Authorities found Ms Morales was "highly intoxicated" when she initiated the breastfeeding between her and her baby.
Ms Morales, on seeing her lifeless daughter, immediately notified authorities from the sheriff's office just before 7 am.
They immediately brought the infant to the Meritus Medical Center. It was there that the baby was officially pronounced dead. Her body was taken afterwards to chief medical examiner in Baltimore for autopsy.
Authorities likewise brought Ms Morales to the same hospital for evaluation before arresting her.
During breastfeeding, the mother's body releases oxytocin to aid the milk "let down." Oxytocin is a known relaxation hormone, which aids mums to relax while breastfeeding their babies.
However, alcohol and oxytocin proved to be a fatal mix in this case.
As is the case, don't drink when you plan to breastfeed; otherwise, risk killing your own child.
