Duchesses at Wimbledon: Kate Middleton, Meghan Markle bond while watching Serena Williams
It’s the duchesses’ day out, with the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Sussex going out together for the first time without their husbands. Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle were at the All England Club to watch American great Serena Williams’ match against German Angelique Kerber on Saturday’s Wimbledon.
The sisters-in-law appeared to have had a great time watching the games together even without Prince William and Prince Harry by their side. The duchesses sat in the exclusive royal box as they watch the matches between Williams and Kerber, as well as between Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.
They were seen talking animatedly with each other and giggling as they enjoyed the matches. The two also met with junior players, ball boys and girls, and wheelchair competitors before the game.
The duo looked every bit as fashionable, with Kate wearing a white dress with black polka dots by British designer Jenny Packham and Meghan wearing a stripped blue and white shirt and high-waisted white palazzo pants by American designer Ralph Lauren.
For the men’s single title, Djokovic beat Nadal in the five-set marathon watch. Williams, meanwhile, lost to Kerber on 6-3, 6-3 upset for the Ladies’ Single Final. In her post-game interview, an emotional Williams gracefully praised her opponent for the great game, while admitting that she was disappointed with herself for losing.
“It’s been an amazing tournament for me, I was really happy to get this far. It’s obviously disappointing but I can’t be disappointed. I have so much to look forward to and I’m literally just getting started,” Williams said, her voice breaking. The seven-time Wimbledon champ, who gave birth to her daughter Alexis Olympia with husband Alexis Ohanian, was the first woman to reach the final since Australian Evonne Goolagong almost four decades ago, as per the Daily Mail.
“To all mums out there, I was playing for you today and I tried, but Angelique played really well. I look forward to continue to being back out there and doing what I do best.”
Her heartfelt speech moved both Kate and Meghan, who gave her a standing ovation.
Kerber, on her part, had nothing but praises for the runner-up. “Serena, you are a great person and a champion. You are coming back and you are such an inspiration for everybody, for all of us and every person watching,” she said. “I’m sure you will have your next grand slam title.”
