A united America is being divided by the west African Ebola virus. More states have deviated from the rules imposed by the federal Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, issuing much stricter and stringent guidelines. The additional states on top of New York, New Jersey and Illinois are Virginia, Maryland, Georgia and Florida.

The White House has criticised the mandatory quarantines imposed earlier by New York, New Jersey and Illinois. Yet it didn't stop the governments of Virginia, Maryland, Georgia and Florida to issue their respective rules. The governors of Virginia and Maryland on Monday said travellers from Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, nations hardest hit by the Ebola virus in west Africa, will be actively monitored by public health officials. They will be asked to self-monitor their temperatures twice a day. In the event they develop an Ebola-like symptom, but comes out negative for the virus, they will be asked to undergo quarantine for the remainder of their three-week incubation period.

In Georgia, asymptomatic travellers will be categorised in three categories: high-risk, low-risk and medical personnel. High-risk travellers, or who have had direct exposure to the Ebola virus, will be mandated to a 21-day quarantine at a designated isolation facility while low-risk travellers may be sent home but required to report their temperature twice daily and report their status once a day to a public health official. Failure to comply with the daily reporting requirement could result to a mandatory quarantine order. Public health officials will monitor healthcare workers who have cared for Ebola patients by video or in-home visits for a three-week period.

In Florida, travellers from Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, upon their arrival, immediately face risk assessment. Regardless of whether the travellers show symptoms or not, all will be monitored by state health officials by taking their temperatures twice-daily for 21 days.

Virginia, Maryland and Georgia explained the additional and stricter rules were issued since their airports are listed among the five dedicated for travellers from the hot zones. The Washington Dulles International Airport is outside Washington DC in Virginia, while Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is in Georgia. Florida's airport, meantime, isn't listed among the five airports.

The CDC released new guidelines on Monday.
