Ed Sheeran cameo roles Part I: Seven times Sheeran appeared in bit roles on TV and film, including his 'GOT' Season 7 scene [VIDEOS]
Ed Sheeran is a singer-songwriter and guitarist by profession, but he sometimes blurs the lines and jumps to acting in TV and films. He usually plays himself and treats viewers as well as the cast of the shows/films he appears in with a brilliant performance featuring one of his popular songs like "Thinking Out Loud."
However, he also likes to surprise fans by appearing as an unexpected character, such as a Lannister soldier in the "Game of Thrones" season 7 premiere episode titled "Dragonstone." Aside from his "GOT" 2017 scene, Sheeran has also appeared in other shows such as "Home and Away" and "The Bastard Executioner." Read on to learn more about it.
7 times that Ed Sheeran appeared in bit roles on TV and film (Part 1):
1. Ed Sheeran in 'Game of Thrones'
Sheeran's scene in "GOT" season 7, which was aired on July 16, received a lot of reaction not just from viewers of the TV series but also from music fans. It featured the musician as a Lannister soldier that Arya (Maisie Williams) comes across while on her way to King's Landing to kill Cersei (Lena Headey).
Of course, the scene includes a bit of a performance from the singer-songwriter. Arya will be surprised to meet Lannister soldiers who are actually kind to her. They treat her well and even offer her some food. At the end of the scene, she reveals her plan to kill the queen, but they just laugh at her, thinking she isn't serious. Watch a clip of the scene at the end of the article.
According to the The Evening Standard (ES), the "Shape of You" musician was cast as a surprise for Williams, who is one of his biggest fans. "We knew that Maisie was a big fan of Ed Sheeran and for years we've been trying to get him on the show so we can surprise Maisie," showrunner David Benioff told ES. "This year we finally did it."
However, reactions to the scene were mixed. Some people loved it, while some found it too distracting or out of place in the series. Check out some of the reactions on YouTube and Twitter about Sheeran's appearance in "Game of Thrones."
"I hated this scene because it completely ripped me out of the story. All I could think was 'that's Ed Sheeran.' They kept framing him in the shot too which was infuriating. A snipped of him as a background character would of been better. It spoiled the fantasy of game of thrones," Mike V (M4K3V13W) posted on YouTube.
"I don't see why people got upset by this. I was a little confused seeing him there but it didn't ruin anything. It was just unexpected," Kalethekill wrote on the video's comments section.
"Ed Sheeran's going to meet Brandon Stark and be like 'when your legs don't work like they used to before'. #GoTS7" Alina Khan (@thealinamahsud) tweeted.
"Friends, please tell me more about how seeing Ed Sheeran in your dragon show is unrealistic," Ronald Funches (@RonFunches) wrote on his Twitter account.
2. 'Bridget Jones's Baby'
The musician also appeared alongside Renée Zellweger (Bridget Jones) and Sarah Solemani (Miranda) as himself in "Bridget Jones's Baby," which was shown in theatres in 2016. It was a funny scene during a music festival that Bridget and Miranda went to. They asked Sheeran to take their picture, but it turned out they didn't recognise the singer. They even thought he was a barista. Later on, they realised that the guy they snubbed was actually Ed Sheeran.
3. 'Home and Away'
Sheeran had a brief scene in the popular Australian soap opera "Home and Away" (H&A) in October 2015. He played the role of Teddy, a singer that Marilyn Chambers (Emily Symons) used to take care of when she lived in the UK. The scene features Marilyn fussing over what to prepare for her reunion with Teddy. Then, he arrived at a cafe in Summer Bay and a lot of people were surprised to see Ed Sheeran. He also performed for a small crowd at Angelo's bar.
"It’s an Australian institution," The Guardian reports Sheeran as saying. "It’s always on in my local chip shop. I got asked to do it and it sounded like it could be fun."
4. 'The Bastard Executioner'
In "The Bastard Executioner," Sheeran played the character Sir Cormac. He appeared in five episodes of the historical FX show in 2015. According to The Hollywood Reporter (THR), Sir Comac is a protégé of a high-ranking church elder. The character is described as deadly and ambitious.
There are three more shows Sheeran has appeared in, and it will be featured in the second part of this article. Watch out for the next instalment. Plus, the singer-songwriter has teased another appearance in a popular show that will be aired in late fall.
