‘Edge of Tomorrow' Facts, Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt Characters
"Edge of Tomorrow" which stars Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, is a sci-fi film based on the Japanese novel "All You Need Is Kill." It follows the premise of a futuristic time-loop war story. "Edge of Tomorrow" opened on June 6 in US cinemas and now viewers know what Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt's character is all about in "Edge of Tomorrow."
"Warning Heavy Movie Spoilers Ahead"
1) Tom Cruise leads the cast of "Edge of Tomorrow" along with actress Emily Blunt. Tom Cruise plays Bill Cage, a man who loses his ad job so applies as a PR for the US Military. "Edge of Tomorrow" director Doug Liman tells shortlist that Tom Cruise's character, Bill Cage, is a total coward in the movie. Bill Cage's first appearance in "The Edge of Tomorrow" finds him handcuffed and wakened from sleep in a makeshift army base at Heathrow Airport. Bil Cage has been accused of desertion by the US Military, though he adamantly claims to not having fired a gun before, and was placed in an exo-skeleton and shipped off for battle in France. His first battle killed him however he wakes up thirty hours before his death.
According to kotaku, at first Tom Cruise is unaware why he keeps relieving the same day. Later on he figures out the rules and constraints of the time loop and uses it to hone his fighting skills so he doesn't get killed over and over again.
2) In "Edge of Tomorrow" mankind is on the brink of destruction. Extra-terrestrial forces have invaded earth with Germany and France the latest countries invaded. Earth's last stand against the forces shows the squadron ship plummeting to the ground as it gets hit by gun fire. Tom Cruise is saved when he ejected from the ship and wheezed down to the shoreline.
3) "Edge of Tomorrow" is like "Starship Troopers" meets "Saving Private Ryan" according to shortlist. Viewers are entertained with stunning visual effects of battle scenes between humans and their metallic, tentacled alien enemies, with Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt leading the battle.
4) "Edge of Tomorrow" also stars Emily Blunt as Rita Vrataski, nicknamed "Full Metal Bitch." In the first few action scenes in the movie, viewers see Emily taking apart the space invaders with a high-tech weapon. Kotaku describes her character as unstoppable and "immortal," having never been injured before in any of her battles. Rita is what Tom Cruise's character wants to be, thus he travels the loop to find her. Their meeting marks the beginning of Cruise's training as a human war machine. Rita is also a time-loop veteran who has figured out the cause of her travels and breaks it. Thus, she understands Bill Cage's plight both on an intellectual and emotional level.
5) Aliens are not the only ones out to kill Tom Cruise in "Edge of Tomorrow." Vrataski, at one point in the movie, kills Tom Cruise with a bullet to his head. Various scenes in "Edge of Tomorrow" also suggest that Rita really intends to kill Tom Cruise. For one, she humorously threatens to put a bullet to his head while they were hiding in an abandoned farmhouse after they escape from a battlefield in France.
6) "Edge of Tomorrow" is also packed with humour. Unlike the original novel "All You Need Is Kill," the movie writer of "Edge of Tomorrow" thought the movie would be even more entertaining if a bit of humour is injected to some scenes. According to shortlist, one scene shows Tom Cruise asking Rita how he could try and share his special ability with her (read: asking for sex), to which he's promptly given his marching orders.
7) "Edge of Tomorrow" has a tragic ending. According to kotaku, it is the final battle in the movie that kills the story. Mid-battle, Rita tells Cruise that one of them needs to die. Movie director Liman also teases that Blunt's character would die in the movie. It is a tragic ending however, according to Liman, Rita won't even remember who Tom Cruise is by the end of the battle.
