Eight-Year-Old Girl Killed after Falling from Royal Adelaide Show Ride
A young girl was killed after she had fallen from a ride at the Royal Adelaide Show on Friday, Sept 12. According to reports, she was eight years old.
The girl fell from the Air Maxx 360 ride at around 12:30 pm (local time). She was found to be unconscious after the fall at the Showgrounds in Wayville. She was taken to the Adelaide Women's and Children's Hospital situated in North Adelaide. However, SafeWork SA confirmed her death later on, ABC News reported.
SafeWork SA is presently investigating the site. According to Attorney-General John Rau, the Air Maxx 360 ride has been shut down for the investigation. The area has been cordoned off by police. The Royal Agricultural & Horticultural Society spokesperson said that the organisation was aware of the case. She said that she had started working on it with "appropriate parties."
SBS mentioned about 13-year-old Oakden girl Emily Furno who witnessed the incident. She spoke to AAP and said that she saw the critically injured girl while the latter was being taken to hospital. "She was bleeding everywhere," Furno said, "She didn't look too good. Everyone who saw the accident was in shock."
On the other hand, 17-year-old Malinda Dunwoodie gave a more detailed description of the incident to News Corp Australia. "She was hanging by her legs off the ride, trying to block herself. She went flying through the air about 10-15m up in the air and I started sprinting towards her," Dunwoodie said, "I was shaking so much, she looked like a doll flying through the air. It was so shocking. It was like a horror movie." She said that the safety harness of the girl was apparently still there. However, the girl seemed to have slipped out of the seat.
One of the parents told ABC News that he was "concerned" about the situation. "As a parent I am obviously very concerned that we should have a position where one of these rides at the Royal Adelaide Show is involved in a serious incident," he said, "We don't know any more about it at the present time but it's under investigation."
