Elijah Wood has agreed to work with Jason Gann in "Wilfred", an FX comedy pilot based on an Australian series of the same title.

"Wilfred" will be Wood's first starring role in series television. He will play as "Ryan", while Gann, co-creator and star of the series, will play the title character.

David Zuckerman wrote the adapted pilot script and is also the executive producer. He said "Wilfred" is a show "about a guy (Wood), the girl next door and a mixed-breed dog, Wilfred, who is part Labrador Retriever and part Russell Crowe on a bender."

Randall Einhorn will direct the pilot and the shooting wll start this summer.

Other exec producers are Rich Frank, Paul Frank and Jeff Kwatinetz of Prospect Park and Joe Connor and Ken Connor of Renegade, producers of the Aussie version of the comedy, while Gann is a co-exec producer.

"Wilfred" is produced by FX Prods.

In the meantime, Wood will be appearing in Galt Niederhoffer's "The Romantics" this fall. He will be joined by actors Katie Holmes, Josh Duhamel and Anna Paquin. He also lent his voice to George Miller's "Happy Feet 2", which is set for release in 3D in 2012.
