Ellen Pompeo To Quit Acting For Good After 'Grey's Anatomy,' Does Not Think Acting Is Empowering Anymore
After two decades of acting, half of which is spent as Meredith Grey in Shonda Rhimes' "Grey's Anatomy," Ellen Pompeo is ready to quit acting because she cannot see herself doing it anymore. The 44-year-old actress even shared that she does not think acting is as empowering now as she thought it was when she was younger.
"I definitely don't have a strong desire to act after 'Grey's [Anatomy],'" shared the actress at Wednesday's Buzzfeed Brews event. "I definitely feel myself transitioning. I don't find acting terribly empowering. For the place I am in my life, I think my age, once I hit 40, I feel differently. I don't necessarily want to work for other people."
Still, she tried to retract her statement. After all, never is a long time. The actress said that she does not want to say she will retire forever and then come back after a while, eating her words. She would rather keep an open mind and spirit to whatever new opportunities that would come to her and see where she goes after "Grey's Anatomy."
However, her quitting does not mean that she'll be out of the TV or movie scene completely. In fact, news report of the actress producing a cop drama for ABC network came up last month. Deadline.com reports that ABC is now developing a female-led crime drama from Pompeo's Calamity Jane production company.
The show focuses on a Keira Burke, a Boston-based cop who was injured gravely the line of duty and returned to the same percent six years later as a police psychologist. Keira has to navigate the politics and changes that transpired when she was gone.
Pompeo claims that this is what she finds interesting and fun now, compared with acting. She loves looking for ideas and looking for projects, as opposed to acting on ideas and projects of other producers.
The actress also shared that she does not regret being an actress at all, saying that it has been an interesting and fun ride. She also viewed it as a wonderful opportunity. She also claimed that even without awards or Emmy's under her name, she thinks that her body of work already proved she's a good actress and she does not have anything to prove anymore.
