"Emily Owens, M.D." a newcomer in medical drama series, has just been cancelled by The CW, TV Line confirmed.

'Owens' debuted to only 1.7 million total viewers last month. Its latest episode (S01xE06) last Tuesday had a million viewers. TV Line reported a CW insider has said the network will air the remaining episodes from its initial order. This means 'Owens' will be seen for seven more weeks on The CW.

Emily Owens was created by Jennie Snyder Urman. It was picked up in May and was first seen on October 16.

The series chronicles the life of Emily Owens (Mamie Gummer), who has just started her internship at Denver Memorial Hospital. Owens struggles to reconcile her high school heart with an adult doc's mind in the series. She interns with her med-school crush Will Collins (Justin Hartley) and her least favorite person in high school, Cassandra Kopelson (Aja Naomi King).

Gummer was last seen as a young promising lawyer in "The Good Wife."

Owens joins other CW shows axed by the network, except the others were at least able to run a full season. "The Secret Circle" is one of these shows.

Emily Owens, M.D. is only just beginning to establish characters. It is a shame that it did not attract more viewers when it seemed to be working on a tested formula, i.e. Ally McBeal.

It is not clear whether the CW will start a new series in the spring. Its upcoming series "The Carrie Diaries" will replace "The Gossip Girl," which, after six seasons, ends in December.
