The End: Art Gallery of Western Australia Concludes Exhibit with Museum of Modern Art in New York
The groundbreaking partnership of the Art Gallery of Western Australia (AGWA) with the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA) came to an end with the third exhibition of the supposedly 6-series exhibition.
In as much as the partnership with MoMA had elevated the way AGWA had reached out to the public with its revolutionary late night openings, variety of new tours and other interpretative programs, the partnership was concluded due to financial constraints.
In a moving letter from Stefano Carboni, Director of Art Gallery of Western Australia, it stated problem with commercial viability as the primary reason for the decision to stop future exhibitions with MoMA.
"I am disappointed to announce that the MoMA series will finish at the end of this current exhibition because it is no longer commercially viable. This decision is based on a combination of increased insurance costs and reduced revenue from ticket sales, which although strong, is lower than the levels forecast at the project's outset," Mr Carboni wrote.
"I am proud that these exhibitions have enjoyed excellent visitor numbers and outstanding visitor satisfaction. When the third exhibition Van Gogh, Dalí and Beyond: The World Reimagined concludes, the MoMA series will have attracted nearly a quarter of a million people since its launch."
Van Gogh, Dali and Beyond: The World Reimagined, is the current, third and will be the last exhibition. The exhibit was scheduled to close on December 2 and will not be followed anymore.
The supposedly 6 part series was launched in June of 2013 with Picasso to Warhol: Fourteen Modern Masters. The collection featured 14 prestigious modern artists in the likes of Picasso, Matisse, Pollock and Warhol.
The second in the series was an exhibition showcasing the world's best photographs, prints and paintings from MoMA's art collection.
"The three exhibitions have elevated the AGWA brand and enticed many Western Australians through the Gallery's doors for the first time - an achievement we are all very proud of. Concluding the series early was an extremely difficult decision to make, but one we feel was best to take when considering the long term interests of the Gallery and the cultural life of the State," Mr Carboni penned.
Despite the end to the partnership, he assured art patrons that AGWA will still work on future exhibits independent of the partnership with MoMA but with hopefully a strong support from local sponsors.
"I would like to thank all those who have been incredibly supportive of this initiative, and encourage everyone to take advantage of this last opportunity to view splendid works from The Museum of Modern Art, New York before the current exhibition Van Gogh, Dalí and Beyond closes on Monday 2 December 2013," Mr Carboni ended the letter.
For those art patrons who already purchased tickets for the 6 part series, Ticketek will contact them for appropriate refunds or they can directly contact the AGWA directly.
