The Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee of the European Parliament unanimously approved a legislative resolution to craft a law that would require all mobile phone manufacturers to make a universal charge to cut down on e-waste.

The European Union has actually been batting for years for a same type of charger for all cellphones and the move of the European Parliament is a step closer.

"We urge member states and manufacturers finally to introduce a universal charge, to put an end to cable chaos for mobile phones and tablet computers," CNET quoted the statement of rapporteur Barbara Weiler.

Most of the phone makers actually manufacture Micro-USB connectors after the European Commission selected that interface as the regional benchmark in 2010, except for Apple which still uses the 30-pin and Lightning connectors. To meet the European standard, the Cupertino-based tech giant produces 30-pin to Micro-USB cable adapters found only in the continent. The Lightning to Micro-USB cable adapter is available globally.

However, from resolution to a law would take a longer period of time.
