Broadcast network SBS has confirmed that Australia has been invited once again to compete at the 61st “Eurovision” Song Contest at Stockholm’s Ericsson Globe, Sweden in May 2016.

Unlike last year, Australia will not have a guaranteed seat in the finals. Instead, the representative will have to earn his or her spot just like every other contestant. Australia’s inclusion is part of the program’s plan to extend beyond Europe.

Eurovision’s Executive Superior Jon Ola told the press, “We strongly believe the Eurovision Song Contest has the potential to evolve organically into a truly global event. Australia's continued participation is an exciting step in that direction."

The talents who have been touted to represent the country in 2016 include “The Voice” coach, Delta Goodrem and The Beards according to The Australian. The other names that are being thrown are of Tina Arena, Jessica Mauboy and Darren Hayes.

Singer Guy Sebastian represented Australia in Eurovision 2015 with “Tonight Again,” and he finished at 5th place. His entry was seen as a one-off invitation, and the first time in the event's 60-year history that Australians have been able to participate in the show. In 2014, pop singer Jessica Mauboy performed as a guest in the program.

Australia is also set to debut in the 2015 Junior Eurovision Contest in Bulgaria this Saturday.

Eurovision is one of the longest running annual TV song competition held among member countries of the European Broadcasting Union since 1956. Each country submits an original song, and votes determine the most popular song in the competition. Måns Zelmerlöw of Sweden won the contest in 2015.
