Ex-Lover of Designer Calvin Klein Bares Details of 2-Year Gay Relationship in New Tell-All Book (VIDEOS & PHOTOS)
Like famous pianist Liberace, whose life was featured in the film Behind the Candlelabras, designer Calvin Klien also had a young male lover who spilled the details of their two-year gay relationship after they split.
The tell-all book proposal, written by journalist Lisa Arcella and titled Obsession: My Life With Calvin Klein, was reported by the New York Post on Tuesday.
Their relationship began in early 2010, which was the first time that Mr Klein went public with young Nick Gruber, his 21-year-old lover. However, their relationship ended when Mr Gruber was arrested for assault and cocaine possession in April 2012 and later sent to an Arizona rehab facility.
When he was released, Mr Gruber move to LA where he had a new and also rich boyfriend, and it was during this time that he announced plans to write himself the book about his love affair with the famous designer.
He initially provided some of the details of their romance to Page Six Magazine in October 2012 which printed the article on December. But he changed his mind and on February 2013 said he would no longer write the book.
When he returned to New York, Mr Gruber continued to denied the existence of such a book, saying, "That was false information. I never said that I was gonna write a book. I never would do something like that or hurt someone that I love," The New York Post quoted Mr Gruber's remark to Michael Musto of Gawker.
Mr Gruber's PR, Matt Rich, explained the existence of the book proposal to a previous advisor whom Mr Gruber did not grant permission to write about his life with Mr Klein.
The book proposal includes a glimpse of Mr Gruber's poor and unhappy life, shuttling between foster families in Florida, while his mum was in jail. He met his father, a former Hells Angel, and lived with him when he was 15.
He met a man who offered him a modeling job when he was almost 18 and had returned to California, and was collection his mum's food stamps at the welfare office. Mr Gruber was not gay, but he eventually discovered that he could fulfill gay men's fantasy which earned him money since the modeling job turned out to include escort services.
He then moved into acting in gay porn movies and then enlisted in the Army where he met a porn producer who introduced him to Mr Klein.
"I really had no idea who (Klein) was. Although I guess I didn't realize it at the time, I grew up pretty poor. I wasn't wearing designer labels unless they could be found on the racks of Wal-Mart and even then I was hardly paying attention to the name inside my underwear," The New York Post quoted Mr Gruber.
They initially started as sexting mates but in March 2010, Mr Klein had him fetched from Kansas to New York in his private plane, picked up by a limo upon arrival and brought to the house of Mr Klein's former wife, Kelly.
That night they had a romantic candle-lit dinner amid a roaring fire and engaged in an epic lovemaking session.
The next morning, Mr Klein introduced him to an artist-friend, the first time he introduced a male as his boyfriend to friends. The designer initially rented a $9,000-a-month apartment for him, but Mr Gruber eventually moved to his penthouse unit.
With his wealth, Mr Klein gave his love new clothes and even paid for his sessions with a steroid doctor and speech therapist to improve him.
While on a European vacation, the couple even made love inside a famous French church, the book proposal claims. Despite their 50-year age difference, Mr Gruber offered the designer a marriage proposal, but their relationship became strained when they returned to New York.
Mr Gruber returned to the apartment and they saw each other on weekends, but in between he was bedding women. Mr Klein eventually stopped paying for the apartment and in April 2012, Mr Gruber was busted for cocaine abuse.
While on rehab, which Mr Klein paid for, the designer once took him to a motel for sex while Mr Gruber was on a four-hour pass, which angered the young man.
He eventually moved to LA, met a new lover, named John Luciano, and wrote the book proposal motivated by anger, Mr Luciano said.
Page Six reported that in late May, Mr Gruber and Mr Klein and reconciled in Mexico, while he remains friends with Mr Luciano.
