Facebook Founder Zuckerberg Weds After IPO: Good or Bad Move?
The news of Facebook Founder, Mark Zuckerberg getting married with his long-time girlfriend, Priscilla Chan is all over the news. Aside from the fact that Zuckerberg got married, the timing is also controversial as Mark Zuckerberg wed after Facebook's IPO.
Good or Bad Move?
Mark Zuckerberg got married with Priscilla Chan immediately after she finished her medical school. Less than 100 guests were present during the wedding and they were surprised as they thought they would only celebrate a graduation party which turned out to be a very surprising wedding celebration. Zuckerberg reportedly gave his new bride a "very simple ruby" ring.
The public is actually divided on whether or not Zuckerberg getting married is a good or bad thing in terms of business. Some people say that this is a good business move because it shows stability right after Zuckerberg's giant social networking site, Facebook was up for IPO. Zuckerberg's share for Facebook is estimated at around US$20 billion and he still has the voting control of the company. Though there are high hopes for the debut of Facebook's company stock, the shares closed at just around US$38 a share. Though that is the case, 576 million shares changed hands and it set a new trading volume record for U.S. market debuts. Facebook had previously disclosed that the company experienced US$3.7 billion in revenue and US$1 billion in profit.
This amount can pose as a big problem to the company especially if there is no pre-nuptial agreement involved between the couple before the wedding. It is typical for rich people to consider a pre-nuptial agreement before getting married in order to protect their individual assets. In California, where the couple was married it implements community-property laws which is not that flexible in terms of dividing assets. There is a chance that Mrs. Zuckerberg (Priscilla Chan) could lay claim to a portion of the options and grants in Facebook stock that was vested during the time of their marriage. A spokesperson from Facebook declined to comment about the matter of prenuptial agreement between the couple.
Happy Coincidence?
Though there is a big divide between the timing of Zuckerberg's wedding, a "friend" who attended the wedding said that the timing was just a coincidence. The "friend" mentioned that the wedding has been planned for months and the couple was just waiting for Priscilla Chan to finish her degree in Pediatrics. The date of the IPO was a "moving target" even before the wedding date was set.
