Facebook movie tops box office in Australia
The Social Network (The Facebook movie) is number 1 in the Australia box office, as it takes in $2.5 million in ticket sales over the weekend.
The movie chronicles the life of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg as he begins to create Facebook during his stay in Harvard campus.
Facebook is the most popular social networking site in the world with over 500 million active users. In Australia, 75 per cent of online Australians visit Facebook according to a Nielsen survey in 2009. Australians also top their U.S. counterparts when it comes to time spent on social networks.
This might explain The Social Networks popularity in the box office, as Australians certainly would love to know the beginnings of the social network that had become part of their online living.
The Facebook movie, as it is popularly referred to, received favorable reviews prior to its opening in the US.
Rotten Tomatoes has given it a 100% rating in their Tomatometer with the Village Voice saying: "The Social Network succeeds, per journalism's most basic directive, in showing not telling. And like great journalism, a great film can capture the reality of the present -- and even make art out of it." (See full report here: The Social Network set to open strong amidst favorable reviews)
