Facebook Status Change Shatters Marriage
First Wife Contacts New Wife
A simple updating on one's status in Facebook had turned into a nightmare for an Australian woman. After announcing to the whole world she had married the love of her life, here comes a woman who messaged her that the husband, whom she thought loved her enough to marry her, was still legally married to someone else.
"Hello, new Mrs Keyet. How can you be Mrs Keyet when I am still Mrs Keyet? From the old Mrs Keyet." Ouch.
The 38-year-old Australian woman and her 40-year-old partner married in civil rites in Australia.
She was aware of his previous marriage from 16 years ago, but was told by her husband that the marriage had long been dissolved. He even offered this explanation upfront to the Family Court celebrant who officiated their wedding.
And because New Mrs Keyet was in love, and she loved him, she took in his story.
As expectedly, she would announce to the world her changed status through Facebook.
And it was also through Facebook that she would be accorded the most saddening information of all regarding her husband.
She told Old Mrs Keyet she believed their union had not been valid, even asking for a copy of their marriage certificate.
But perhaps woman's instinct, coupled with a woman's wrath, New Mrs Keyet scoured divorce registries and found her husband's earlier marriage was never dissolved. In fact to this day, it still is legal and binding.
New Mrs Keyet eventually had her new marriage annulled. During the proceedings, her husband did not show up in court, only sending a text message that read, "I think I've put you through enough hurt." The court has granted her application to have the marriage annulled.
New Mrs Keyet-no more is now considering filing bigamy charges against her former partner.
