Facebook Trends: Melbourne Emerged Top City with Most Check-ins in Australia
Facebook has released a list of places with the most number of check-ins in 2013, with theme parks, sporting arenas and tourist attractions dominating the survey. The social network revealed 25 of the most popular destinations around the world with Melbourne as the number 1 city that had the most check-ins by Facebook users in Australia.
Disneyland in Anaheim, California topped the popular locations list on Facebook in the United States, while other Disneyland theme parks in Paris and Tokyo are also on the worldwide list. Tourist attractions like Iceland's Blue Lagoon, Singapore's Marina Bay Sands and St Mark's Square in Venice were among the top 25 in the worldwide list of top Facebook check-ins.
Sydney may be the tourism capital of Australia but when it comes to Facebook check-ins, Melbourne takes the lead. The capital of Victoria was hailed as the top check-in spot for Facebook users. Four places in Melbourne were included in the top ten places that Aussies checked-in using Facebook.
The Melbourne Cricket Ground, Rod Laver Arena and Etihad Stadium made it to the top 5 as well as Crown Casino who took second place. The Melbourne Cricket Ground emerged as the most checked-in location in Australia, and ranked number 18 in Facebook's worldwide list of popular places.

Pope Francis emerged as the most talked-about person on Facebook for 2013, in a report released by the company itself. The leader of the Roman Catholic church beat other popular personalities like Miley Cyrus and the royal baby, including events like the elections, floods, typhoons and even the Harlem Shake.
In its year-end report, Facebook revealed users talked more about Pope Francis than any other personality or event. Facebook's list of most discussed topics in the world was taken from user data for the past year. In 2012, the most talked about topic was the U.S. presidential elections.
In Australia, Facebook users love talking about the vote, Kate Middleton and cricket. Former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and incumbent Tony Abbott were also included in the list.
