Fashion Fault: Kate Middleton, Prince William, Upset Solomon Islands Locals [PHOTOS]
Beneath the smiles and the vibrant colors while they were visiting, it seems that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge upset the people of Solomon Islands for wearing the wrong get-up.
When Kate Middleton and Prince William appeared in colorful garb to honor the tropical vibe of the Solomon Islands during a gathering last Sept. 16, little did they know that they are offending the nation's locals. Although thinking that the dress and shirt were made by locals, members of the royal staff overlooked that the garments were from Cook Islands, situated 3,000 miles from the Solomon Islands.
A true mishap and a result of misunderstanding, the Duchess ditched the original dress she was planning to wear when she saw the strapless pink number left in her room as a gift. The same went with the Duke as he donned a light blue tropical-print shirt.
"Items of clothing were left in The Duke and Duchess's hotel room as had previously been agreed with the Solomon Island Government (SIG)." said a Clarence House spokesperson to E! News when asked about the incident.
"Given that the items were not of the same design as the Royal Household had been informed previously, the Duke and Duchess's staff undertook to check that the items of clothing were indeed the gifts of the Government and not a gift from any other individual." further added the representative.
The representative made it clear that the Duke and Duchess did not mean to offend anyone by wearing the gift.
"Once the necessary reassurances were received from the Government, mistakenly as it later appeared, Their Royal Highnesses wore the shirt and the dress as an appropriate gesture befitting their close ties to the people of Solomon Islands." continued the Clarence House representative.
Meanwhile, Kate and Wills made sure to make their Island memories count by keeping the clothes handed to them as mementos and souvenirs.
"The situation arose through no fault of Solomon Island Government or the Royal Household. The original gifts (the shirts) are now with The Duke and will be kept by him for personal use, as a memento of his and The Duchess's wonderful time on Solomon Islands."
