Fellow comics who performed in a hastily arranged tribute and benefit show for the late stand-up comedian and Last Comic Standing host Greg Giraldo raised $3,000 for the Comedy Central roaster's family.

Joey Kola opened and hosted Friday night's event at the Governor's Comedy Club in Levittown, New York and together with Carie Karavas, Melvin George, Joe Starr, Tim Gage and Darren Dillon drew fans. Club owner Marc Lund assembled the comic cast from across the state in just two days notice to "celebrate his life."

The stand-up comedians were one in saying that Giraldo was the "King of the Roasts" and a "genuine guy" as they recall stories of the comedian, who died from accidental drug overdose on Wednesday.

New York City stand-up comic Tex Alejandro closed the show by reading a self-drafted letter wherein he described Giraldo as a "maestro of comedy" and "professor" to up-and-coming comedians.

Giraldo had been a source of inspiration for many performers like him as he watched acts of upcoming comedians and gave outright feedback.

After Alejandro's reading, videos of Giraldo's acts were shown on a screen but laughter took a back seat for tears from fans and colleagues.
