Germany is the new world champion in football. Argentina finished second for the second time since it won the title in 1986. The world cup had 171 goals, the highest number of goals in a single tournament in the world cup history, equalising the number of the 1998 version.

Here we make a dream team with the best of the best players in the tournament. Only one team ended up winning the title as always but there were several who stood out with their performance. There can be a few other versions of the "Dream Team." Here is ours.

Goalkeeper

Manuel Neuer: He is arguably the best goalkeeper on the planet at the moment. He proved how magnificent he is in this tournament. He is often called the sweeper-goalkeeper for his tendency to come out of the penalty box. However, his goalkeeping has never been compromised due to that. He won the "Golden Gloves" for being the most outstanding goalkeeper in the tournament.

Defenders

Philipp Lahm: The German captain hardly committed any mistake in this world cup as a defender. He was rock-solid, and he protected the German net like a gallant warrior.

Javier Mascherano: The 30-year-old Argentine defender had an outstanding tournament. Argentina came to the tournament with questions raised about its defence. It ultimately conceded 5 in 7 matches. A huge credit goes to this man.

Vincent Kompany: The Manchester City captain had a big role to play for Belgium which conceded only 3 goals in 5 matches. Kompany, Belgium's national captain, led his team with example.

Midfielder

Toni Kroos: Kroos played outstandingly for his team. He assisted the goal against France that took Germany to the semi-finals. He was one of the finest midfielders of the tournament. He even scored a couple against Brazil.

Lionel Messi (C): There was a not expected from the "Golden Boy" of Argentina. We have seen only splashes of his genius in this tournament. It is not possible to make a dream team without the "Golden Ball" winner for being the most outstanding player of the tournament.

Arjen Robben: It won't be an exaggeration to say that Robben was nearly unbeatable in this tournament. His sprints with the ball, ball-control and invincible enthusiasm made people fall in love with the Netherlands all over again.

Xherdan Shaqiri: The Swiss midfielder, who plays for Bayern Munich in the German Bundesliga, was a pivotal force in his team. He won the "Man of the Match" twice. He even scored a hat-trick against Honduras.

Forward

Neymar: He started showing his knack of finding the net during the early stages of the tournament. If Neymar did not break his vertebra in the Colombia match, things could have been quite different for Brazil.

James Rodríguez: He could well be termed as the "find of the tournament." He scored in all the matches he played in this world cup. He eventually won the "Golden Boot" for scoring the highest number of goals even though he played only 5 matches.

Thomas Müller: He scored a hat-trick against Portugal in Germany's opening match in the tournament. He went on to score a couple more. Even when he did not score, he looked dangerous whenever he got close to the penalty area.

Coach

Jürgen Klinsmann: Nobody expected much from his team except the fans. He rose up to the occasion and inspired an entire nation. Composed and motivational, the German coach of the United States will lead here as well.

Substitutes

Tim Krul (The Netherlands), Thiago Silva (Brazil), Rafael Márquez (Mexico), Angel Di Maria (Argentina), Karim Benzema (France).
