The round of 16 of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil has been concluded and only eight teams remain to battle it out in the quarterfinals. At this point, It's an even toss-up between the Americas and Europe with four representatives each. Both the African teams who made it out of the group stage were taken out by their European opponents in the knockout stage.

The round of 16 was full of drama and the trend of 11th hour winners or equalisers prevailed throughout all four days of the competition. Two matches were decided on penalties while three were decided on extra time. Two of the three matches that were settled in regulation time were sealed within the closing ten minutes of the game. Only the game between Colombia and Uruguay was decided early in the match with Colombian star James Rodriguez scoring the team's two goals in the 28th and 50th minute respectively.

The quarterfinal fixtures will open with a clash between bitter rivals Germany and France to ensure at least one European team in the semi-finals. The second match on the other hand, featuring hosts Brazil and Colombia, does the same to ensure a spot in the semis for a team from the Americas. The host nation survived a scare from Chile in their round of 16 match and they will be hoping to advance further into the competition to set-up a dream final at the Maracana.

The other two quarterfinal matches feature head-to-head matches between South American teams and European teams with Argentina going up against underdogs Belgium and 2010 runners-up Netherlands going up against Costa Rica.
