The Dutch came to the 2014 FIFA World Cup with a vengeance after losing to Spain in the 2010 final in South Africa. They were out for revenge and did just that by thrashing the defending champions 5-1 in their opening match. Spain never recovered for the first match and also lost their match against Chile, one that they needed to win to stay in contention. Back-to-back losses booted out the defending champions which left them to play a farewell match with no bearing on their qualification.

The Oranje sealed the deal with a win over the Soceroos in their second match. With only two teams having points coing into the last round, it was only a battle for bragging rights and top of the group for Netherlands and Chile in the last group stage match.

Chile started well by defeating Australia but their 2-0 win over Spain guaranteed their qualification and took out the champions. The final group stage match between Chile and the Netherlands was a bid to avoid group A winners Brazil and the Oranje came out on top.

Meanwhile, Spain were able to save face and a little bit of pride by ending their campaign with a 3-0 win over Australia where flickers of the once mighty La Furia Roja could still be seen.
