‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ Most Requested Book by Detainees from Cuba’s Guantanamo Prison Camp
Who would have thought that reforming prisoners detained at the Guantanamo detention camp in Cuba, instead of a copy of the Quran, has been asking for copies of the scandalously wicked Fifty Shades of Grey series to while their time.
"Rather than the Quran, the book that is requested most by the (Camp 7 detainees) is 'Fifty Shades of Grey.' They've read the entire series," Representative Jim Moran of Virginia told Huffington Post. "I guess there's not much going on, these guys are going nowhere, so what the hell."
The detention camp on the naval base is currently in the limelight, following clamours for its closure. Mr Moran, who was among the U.S. congressional delegates who toured the Camp 7 facility last week, said he was surprised with the book's popularity among the detainees there.
Camp 7 is labeled as a top-security facility. It currently holds 15 or 16 "high-value" prisoners, including five men charged with plotting the Sept 11, 2001 attacks against the U.S.
With Mr Moran during the site visit were Senator Tim Kaine, Reps Frank Wolf and Gerry Connolly. William Lietzau, Pentagon's chief of detainee policy, was also present.
The anecdote about the "high-value" prisoners' preference for the Fifty Shades of Grey series came during the tour. It was not specified who precisely uttered the remark, but the touring delegation, apart from the lawmakers, also included the commander of the base and his deputy commander, the head medical official and the officer in charge of Camp 7.
Lieutenant Colonel Samuel House, a spokesman for the prison camp, neither confirmed nor denied the anecdote.
"We don't discuss our high-value detainees except in the most generic terms. Further, we do not discuss the assertions made by members of Congress," he was quoted by Reuters.
Reuters did,, however, confirm the camp's library, which provides books, magazines and DVDs to all 166 captives, does have a diverse collection, including Star Trek novelisations, stress reduction workbooks, even Agatha Christie mysteries. The Hunger Games book and movie versions are also there.
Set for a movie release in August 2014, the Fifty Shades of Grey book series has sold more than 70 million copies worldwide.
The popularity of the book apparently could not be questioned, when just on Tuesday, UK's London Fire Brigade disclosed attending to a rising number handcuff-related bedroom games emergency situations, all fuelled by the Fifty Shades of Grey series.
