Malaysia Wins Over Indonesia 4-3
The Southeast Asian games in Indonesia has been marred by the accidental death of two spectators, while 10 were hurt and hospitalized, as a result of a stampede that broke off after some disgruntled fans set fire to two ticket booths.
Crowds estimated at 100,000 went to watch the finals football match between Indonesia and Malaysia. Reports said the 80,000 seat stadium could no longer accommodate more and ticket sales were stopped, prompting rowdy fans to take action causing the fire and stampede.
Reports from Agence France Presse and Indonesia's local news agency Tempo said the two fatalities identified by Indonesian media as 20-year-old Reno, a drummer. The second victim is a Kusmanto from the Cililitan district in eastern Jakarta.
It took almost two hours for the authorities to recover the bodies of those hurt by the accident as the roads were jammed with thousands of vehicles.
In the crucial finals Indonesia lost the final soccer match to Malaysia, 4-3.
Government authorities and game organisers even called for calm a day earlier, but this was not heed by the fans.
